The WCA's interest in developing its international reach and helping members showcase developments abroad has resulted in the creation of this web portal, designed with the goal of driving investment and providing a useful wealth of regional contact and background information, as well as up-to date news and telecom trends on the Indian market.

As India sits, poised to align upcoming spectrum auctions with crucial wireless broadband technology choices, many WCA members have begun to focus both their attention and resources on the region. Currently behind China in broadband connectivity, India's lack of an abundant fixed-line infrastructure has lead to its logical decision to pursue wireless WiMAX technology in outfitting a volume driven industry primed for large scale deployments.

The momentum is building in this exciting new market, confirmed by Maravedis Research who recently released a report projecting that there will be 13 million WiMAX subscribers in India by 2012.

WiMAX, 3G Allocations Approved By Ministry In India
India's Ministry of Communication approved the award of 3G mobile and WiMAX wireless broadband spectrum to state-run telcos Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd, reported TeleGeography.  Each company will be allocated blocks of 2x5MHz in the 2.1GHz frequency band as well as a 20MHz block of WiMAX spectrum in the 2.5GHz band.  MTNL operates fixed line and wireless networks in New Delhi and Mumbai, and BSNL’s fixed and wireless services cover all other areas of the country.  Private companies will participate in auctions in the coming weeks, and the highest bid will dictate the prices the two state-run companies will pay.  The planned WiMAX auction is for two 20MHz blocks in both the 2.3GHz and 2.5GHz bands.  The government also announced that blocks of frequencies in the 700MHz and 3.3GHz-3.6GHz bands will be auctioned as they become available to offer fixed WiMAX and rural wireless broadband services to consumers.  Details.
